A good weekend. Friday brought a number of people over to my place for a perfectly sized party. I’m not sure what the final count was, but it seemed like everyone was comfortable in my little studio. We enjoyed sitting and chatting, watching videos, playing with the cats (mainly bunki), shooting various people with squirt guns, and tying MFC up. As usual, Rubin has the photos.

Thanks for everyone coming out and hanging out! Was kind of weird to have not had a studio-warming party yet. Now that’s out of the way, and my place has never been cleaner! Oh, and by the way, I’ll have to have another party sometime soon, since overestimating alcohol consumption plus people bringing stuff means an excess of party supplies to be utilized.

Saturday morning (the actual day of my birthday) I was out of bed early to run down to the Box Shop for a Fire Arts class taught by Propaniac and Dave X. A great newbie intro to all the aspects of propane and building flame effects. All through class my phone went off with family and friends calling me, but I was learnin and couldn’t be interrupted! hehe Saturday night Heather and I ordered a bunch of delicious food from Little Star pizza down on the corner and stayed in.

Sunday was the second part of the fire arts class. We spent the day building a piece. I spent the morning learning to weld, and the afternoon running around doing various things. A video of the piece we built is below and pictures from class are here.

Sunday evening was a DDI meeting, and then the fire jam where I finally lit my virgin rope dart for the first time.
Video of the first burn of my dart (thanks to <lj user="mooflyfoof"> for the camerawork):

So all in all a good weekend, no candles, but plenty of fire to make up for it.

So I never thought I’d be the kind of person that would enjoy ballet. It just never appealed to me. But that’s because nobody was doing ballet with me in mind! Take a classic story, add some Wushu, some breaking, a bit of acrobatics, and a lot of fire, and you’ve got something I would enjoy. Enter The Crucible and their fire ballet rendition of Romeo & Juliet last night. (Unfortunately no pictures in respect to the people that put so much work into this. Film and video will not do it justice, you have to see it in person)

I heard about this a few weeks back, and convinced Heather that it was worth skipping aerials for. Looks like she agrees. I won’t say too much cause I wouldn’t want to ruin it for anyone that’s going. It was a good mix of ballet and fire. While you can never have too much fire, I definitely walked away satisfied with what I saw. Flaming swords, small fireballs, staffs, fans, and even parts of the set were regularly aflame. And one nice thing, there was only one set of poi for about 30 seconds. There were quite a few times over the course of the evening where I wish I had multiple sets of eyes, not knowing where to watch on the stage, not wanting to miss a thing. So in short, highly recommended, worth the ticket price, don’t miss it, two thumbs up, best ballet ever, etc.
